Terveisiä Amazoniasta ja Auringosta
Tässä jutussa: Ilmatieteen laitoksen pääjohtaja Petteri Taalas on muuttanut mielensä ja varoittaa ilmastonmuutoksen uhkaavan ihmiskunnan olemassaoloa. Kuivuus muuttaa Amazonian sademetsät hiilen lähteeksi. Ja auringossa pilkistelee pelastus.
Taalaksen varoitus
Olin melko tarkalleen tasan vuosi sitten kansallista ilmastopoliittista tulevaisuusselontekoa valmistelleen asiantuntijaryhmän kuultavana. Esitin tuolloin toiveen, että selonteossa otettaisiin huomioon myös mahdollisuus rajumpaan globaaliin lämpenemiseen kuin ne parin kolmen asteen lämpenemisennusteet, joihin virallisesti tavataan viitata. Käydyssä keskustelussa Ilmatieteen laitoksen pääjohtaja Petteri Taalas kuitenkin tyrmäsi näkemykseni todeten, että tämä olisi turhaa koska hillitymmätkin ennusteet ovat riittävän dramaattisia ja asia otetaan näiden pohjalta jo tarpeeksi vakavasti. Nyt Taalaksen mieli on selvästikin muuttunut. Askettäin (26.3.) hän varoitti Helsingin Sanomissa, että ”ilmastonmuutos on jopa uhka ihmiskunnan olemassaololle”. Hän pohdiskelee, että globaali lämpötilan nousu 5 asteella tällä vuosisadalla saattaisi supistaa ihmiskunnan populaation vain miljardiin ihmiseen eli kuudesosaan nykyisestä. Mahdollisesta 10 asteen lämpenemisestä hän arvelee ihmiskunnan sinänsä yhä selviävän, mutta vain korkeilla leveysasteilla ja vuoristossa.
Hätkähdyttävästi Taalas myös toteaa ikään kuin varmana asiana, että uusimpien tutkimusten mukaan ”Amazonin nykyisistä sademetsistä menetetään 70 prosenttia vuoteen 2080 mennessä”. Kaipa tähän ilmastomallien antamaan tulokseen kuitenkin (toivottavasti) vielä jokunen epävarmuus sisältyy, mutta tähän suuntaan tulokset kaiken kaikkiaan viittaavat.
Amazonia hiilen lähteenä
Itse asiassa nämä kaksi Taalaksen mainitsemaa asiaa liittyvät sikäli suoraan toisiinsa, että mikäli keskeisin Amazonian metsätuhoa ennakoiva (Hadley Centren) ilmastomalli on oikeassa ja sen ennuste todella toteutuu – kuten Taalas antaa ymmärtää – myös noin 5 asteen lämpeneminen on selviö. Mallin mukaan lämpeneminen nimittäin muuttaa ekosysteemit hiilinieluista hiilen lähteiksi, mikä voimistaa ihmisen aiheuttamaa lämpenemistä lähes puolella.
Aivan pari viikkoa sitten Science-lehti julkaisikin tutkimuksen, joka totesi Amazonian metsien olevan yllättävän herkkiä kuivuudelle. Tutkijoiden mukaan Amazonian metsät imevät tavanomaisina vuosina itseensä lähes 2 miljardia tonnia hiiltä, mutta pahana kuivuusvuotena 2005 metsät sen sijaan päästivät ilmaan 3 miljardia tonnia hiiltä. Muutos – lähes 5 miljardia tonnia hiiltä – vastaa Euroopan ja Japanin yhteenlaskettuja vuotuisia hiilidioksidipäästöjä.
Havaitut metsän hiilipäästöt johtuivat puukuolemista ja mikäli lämpeneminen mallien mukaisesti tuo kuivuutta Amazonin alueelle, metsän vastaus on ilmiselvä. Kyseisessä Science-lehden julkaisemassa tutkimuksessa käytettiin laajaa tutkimusaineistoa noin 30 vuoden ajalta ja työhön osallistui 68 tutkijaa 13 maasta.
Pari kriittistä kommenttia
Taalaksen sinänsä herättävä kirjoitus kirvoittaa pari kriittistä kommenttia. Hän esimerkiksi mainitsee, että vaikka Amazonia tuhoutuukin ”vastaavasti Saharan sademäärien on laskettu kasvavan, joten pitkällä aikavälillä aluetta voidaan mahdollisesti metsittää”. Tottahan tämä sinänsä on, mutta ei kai Saharan mahdollisesti vuosisatoja kestävän ”metsittämisen” sentään mitenkään voida ajatella kompensoivan Amazonian tuhoa ja sen seurauksia. Lisäksi Saharassakin lämpenemisen seurauksena myös haihtuminen voimistuu, eikä uutta sademetsää Saharaan ihan hetkessä kasvateta.
Mahdollisen 10 asteen lämpenemisen vaikutuksia pohtiessaan Taalas kirjoittaa, että ”seurauksena olisi nälkää, kansainvaelluksia ja sotia – puhumattakaan siitä, mitä nykyiselle talousjärjestykselle tapahtuisi”. Tämä arvio vaikuttaa kyllä siinä mielessä varovaiselta, että eikö saman olisi voinut sanoa jo 5 asteen lämpenemisestä. Ihmispopulaation romahdus noin 9 miljardista, jonka suuruiseksi se muutamassa vuosikymmenessä ensin kasvanee, aina yhteen miljardiin tuskin käy sen paremmin ilman nälkää, kansainvaelluksia ja sotia – talouskaaoksesta puhumattakaan.
Samanlaista virallista varovaisuutta piilee myös Taalaksen analyysissä, jonka mukaan hänen esille tuomansa tiedeyhteisön uudet arviot ilmastonmuutoksen vakavuudesta ”koskevat tilannetta, jossa kasvihuonepäästöjä ei kyetä rajoittamaan ja vielä hyödyntämättömät fossiiliset polttoaineet käytetään”. Käsittääkseni uusien hälyttävien kannanottojen takana on kuitenkin yhtä lailla käsitys siitä, että lähestymme kovaa vauhtia pistettä, jonka jälkeen edes päästöjen tiukkakaan rajoittaminen ei enää riitä. Juuri tätä olen käsitellyt parissa edellisessä jutussani. Ilmeisesti tämän sanominen on (Suomessa) vielä kovin radikaalia.
Joka tapauksessa, kuten Taalas kirjoittaa, ”planeettamme olojen säilyttäminen on nyt meidän käsissämme”.
Aurinko viilenee – olemmeko pelastetut?
Vai onkohan planeettamme tulevaisuus sittenkin ylemmissä käsissä? Joitakin päiviä sitten saatiin nimittäin Saariselällä pidetyn Space Climate Symposiumin tiimoilta kuulla, että aurinkotutkijoiden mukaan aurinko on viilenemässä ja näin ollen samoin kävisi maapallolle.
Alun perin en aikonut kommentoida asiaa suotta mitenkään, mutta sanotaan nyt muutama sananen, koska uutisesta nousi – oikeastaan aika odotetusti – havainnon todellista merkitystä isompi haloo.
Ensinnäkin, on erikoista, että jopa ihan järki-ihmiset ovat kommentoineet havainnon auringon aktiivisuuden heikkenemisestä olevan ilmastotutkimuksen ”valtavirran vastainen”. Ajatuksena siis on, että havainto jotenkin tekisi tyhjäksi kaiken, mitä ilmakehän fysiikasta tiedetään. Tämähän ei pidä millään tasolla paikkaansa, vaan aurinkotutkimus on ollut ja on tärkeä osa ilmastotutkimusta – siis ihan sitä ”valtavirtaa”.
Auringon aktiivisuuden tiedetään vaihtelevan. Parhaiten tunnetaan noin 11-vuotisten (tai oikeammin 22-vuotisten) auringonpilkkujaksojen tuottama vaihtelu. Nyt eletään auringonpilkkuminimiä eli tämän vaihtelun viileintä vaihetta.
Myös pidempiä, kymmenien ja jopa tuhansien vuosien vaihteluita auringon aktiivisuudessa on havaittu. Joidenkin tutkimusten mukaan aurinko olisi esimerkiksi nykyään – pitkällä aikavälillä tarkasteltuna – aktiivisimmillaan 8000 vuoteen.
Maapallon ilmastoon auringon aktiivisuuden vaihteluilla on kuitenkin ollut varsin pieni vaikutus. Ne ovat kylläkin mitä ilmeisimmin esimerkiksi keskiajan lämpöjaksona ja pienenä jääkautena tunnettujen ilmastollisten heilahtelujen takana, mutta vaikutus maapallon keskilämpötilaan on kaikkine lämpötilan muutosta vahvistavine takaisinkytkentöineenkin ollut vain muutaman asteen kymmenesosan luokkaa. Verrattuna siihen, kuinka kasvihuonekaasujen lasketaan tulevaisuudessa maapalloa lämmittävän, aurinko on pikkutekijä.
On tietysti jännittävää ajatella, että nyt auringon aktiivisuus voisikin heikentyä. Tästä on kuitenkin toistaiseksi hyvin vähän näyttöä ja ainakin Ilmatieteen laitoksen aurinkotutkijoiden mukaan se vähäkin näyttö on näennäistä. Auringon tämänhetkinen tila voi yhtä hyvin liittyä nykyiseen auringonpilkkuminimiin. Kuten EISCAT-järjestön johtaja Esa Turunen Helsingin Sanomissa (19.3.) totesi: ”Parin seuraavan vuoden aikana jännäämme, kääntyykö aktiivisuus jälleen nousuun niin kuin pitäisi".
Pidetään peukkua
Tarkentavaa lisäinformaatiota odotellessamme voimmekin pitää peukaloitamme tiukasti pystyasennossa ja toivoa, että uutinen pitäisi paikkansa ja auringon aktiivisuus todella olisi hieman heikkenemässä. Se voisi – uskomattoman hyvällä onnella – antaa meille ehkä jokusen todella tarpeellisen vuoden lisää aikaa saada kasvihuonekaasupäästömme kuriin ja näin välttyä pahimmilta ilmastomyllerryksiltä.
Surkeinta taas on, jos auringon – vasta muutaman tutkijan silmissä väikkyvän – viileämmän vaiheen uskotaan kumoavan koko kasvihuoneteorian ja kuvitellaan, että huolemme ovat pois pyyhityt.

Amazonin kuivuminen ja
Amazonin kuivuminen ja palaminen on tainnut jäädä keskusteluissa jäätiköiden sulamisen varjoon.
Amazonin palaminen voi kuitenkin olla käsittääkseni nopea ja massiivinen globaali katastrofi toisin kuin esim. antarktikseksen isojen jäätiköiden romahdus. Tätä Pasi ei ehkä ihan loppuun asti yllä käsitellyt.
Kuivuus (osin El Ninon "tukemana") voinee parissa vuodessa tuhota Amazonin vedenkierron (sade/haihdunta-kierto) ja kun päiväntasaajalla aurinkokin on kuuma vaikka sen pilkut olisivat missä asennossa, massiiviset tulipalot ovat kuivassa metsässä väistämättömiä (palo on tietysti pyromaanin syytä, eikä johdu ilmastonmuutoksesta, minkä saamme tästäkin blogista valitettavasti sitten lukea).
Jos Amazonista palaa 70%, hiilipäästöt ovat käsittääkseni niin valtavia että ihmisen päästöillä ei enää vaikutusta ole.
Palojen aiheuttamat noki- ja hiukkaspäästöt saastuttavat valitettavan tehokkaasti koko maapallon ilmakehän vuosikymmeniksi, ja mikä pahinta, metaanipitoisuus tullee nousemaan kun oliko se nyt hydroksyyliradikaalipitoisuudet romahtavat (tätä kemia-kuviota en nyt ihan muista) kun metaani enää hajoa ilmakehässä.
Saattaapi tulla paha "ilmastohyppäys", Amazonin laajan tuhoutumisen jälkeen globaali ilmasto ei varmasti ole enää entisellään. Siinä ihmiskunta saa kunnon kyytiä "ihan luonnollisesti"!
Palaako (vai kuivuuko muuten vaan) tuo 70% kerralla vai voiko Amazon tuhoutua pikku hiljaa vuosikymmenien kuluessa esim. 10% vuosikymmenessä? Itse epäilen että 10% kuivuminen kiihdyttää loppujen 80-90% tuhoutumista niin paljon että lähes koko sademetsä menee vuosissa tai vuosikymmenessä. Onko tuo vuosikymmen 2010 tai 2070, sitä ei taida kukaan osata laskea?
Mistäköhän tuo 70% 2080 mennessä on tullut?
Entä voisiko sademetsän jotenkin pelastaa sateita keinotekoisesti luomalla tms.?

On vaikea kuvitella, että kuivuus ihan parissa vuodessa tuhoaisi KOKO Amazonian vedenkierron, mutta jotkut tutkijat kyllä pelkäävät, että jo ihan muutaman vuoden rankka kuivuusjakso voisi laukaista peruuttamattoman metsien tuhoutumisen ketjureaktion. Tätäkään on tosin sikäli vaikeahko sulattaa, että vuosisatojen varrella Amerikkoja on kuitenkin koetellut erinäisiä hyvinkin pitkiä kuivuusjaksoja. Hadley Centren mallissa kriittinen kynnys ylittyy kuitenkin vihdoin noin vuoden 2040 paikkeilla.
Toteutuessaan Amazonian palo - ennen savanniksi tai puoliaavikoksi muuttumistaan metsät väistämättä roihuaisivat - voisi, arvaan, olla suurin palo maapallolla miljooniin vuosiin. Eivät niiden tuottamat hiilidioksidipäästöt silti ihmisen päästöjä mitätöisi. Kuten mainitsin, Hadleyn mallin mukaan ekosysteemien päästöt voimistaisivat ihmisen aiheuttamaa ilmastovaikutusta noin puolella, ja laskussa on sentään mukana myös maailman muista ekosysteemeistä vapautuvat päästöt. Näiden laskujen mukaan Amazonian sademetsien noin 70-prosenttinen tuhoutuminen voisi nostaa globaalia lämpötilaa puolisen astetta.
Hydroksyylikuvion muistat oikein. Palot todennäköisesti pudottaisivat ilmakehän hydroksyyliradikaalien määrää roimasti, mikä puolestaan pidentäisi metaanin elinikää ilmakehässä.
Kommenttiasi, että Amazonian "palo on tietysti pyromaanin syytä, eikä johdu ilmastonmuutoksesta, minkä saamme tästäkin blogista valitettavasti sitten lukea", en ihan hahmota. Jos sen joku tänne kirjoittaisi, niin joku kommentoija. Minä olen ainakin nimenomaan kritisoinut sitä, että Australian suurpalot laitettiin pitkälti pyromaanien piikkiin maata riivanneesta ennätyskuivuudesta ja ennätyshelteistä huolimatta. Kehitys on riittävän
Kehitys on riittävän huolestuttavaa ilman Amazonin roihahtamistakin.
Hadleyn malleissa on jo monia tekijöitä mukana, mutta epäilen että ei ihan kaikkia.
Tuli vaan mieleen "mahdollinen kehityskulku" jossa ihminen jälleen mokaa ja luonnon takaisinkytkennät lähtevät käyntiin:
Amazonille tulee 2005 kaltainen kuivuus 2015. Kulottajat näkevät tilaisuutensa, lisää laidun- ja soijapeltoja. Palot riistäytyvät osin hallinnasta ja muutama miljoona km2 palaa (ei siis paljon). Syntyy valtava nokipilvi joka leviää ympäri maapalloa. Nokea sataa erityisesti Siperian keväthangille (käy huono säkä), valkoinen muuttuu mustaksi ja iso manner kun on lämpötilat nousevat kymmeniä asteita normaalista. Kesäkuussa palaa myös taiga. Samalla menee pohjoinen pysyvä merijää kun Siperian nokipilvet ne mustaavat eikä aurinko laske.
Routa sulaa ja Siperian suot pulpuavat metaania. Venäjän kaasu(=metaani)kentät aiheuttavat lisäksi sortuessaan lisäpäästöjä, myös öljykentät ja -putkistot palavat. Mongolia ja Sahara tulvivat, matalapaineiden kierto muuttuu heti kun pohjoinen lämpenee.
Amazonian kuivuu edelleen ja seuraavana vuonna palaa jälleen muutama miljoona km2 lisää, uusi nokipilvi, Metaani superkasvihuonekaasuna säilyy ilmakehässä kun hydroksyylit eivät sitä enää hajota jne. ja pari vuotta tätä niin ilmastonmuutos on yllättäen ihan eri tilanteessa kuin nyt kukaan osaa kuvitella.
Luonto osaa yllättää ja ihminen töpeksiä lukuisin eri tavoin joita emme nyt osaa ennustaa, yhdessä näistä syntyy kunnon katastrofi varsinkin kun hiilipäästöillä on ensin saatu ilmasto ja ekosysteemit epävakaiksi.
Joo, katsoin eilen minuutin "Day after tomorrow"-elokuvaa, se on täysin järjetön leffa tieteen kannalta. Ylläoleva ei mielestäni sisällä mitään uutta tai ihmeellistä - olisi jopa kumma jos suunnilleen noin ei kävisi.
Jälkeenpäin voidaan sitten viisastella oliko katastrofin ja dominoefektin syy Hadleyn mallien puutteissa ja tiedemiehissä, poliitikkojen ja median piittaamattomuudessa, autoilijassa, kulottajassa vai kaasuinsinöörissä. Vai kollektiivisessa tyhmyydessä.

EU:n viisaat tietävät että puun ja muun biologisen materiaalin palaessa syntyy 0g hiilidioksidia, joten syytä huoleen ei ole vaikka koko Amazonia palaisi! Ja palaahan se vielä, mutta hallitummin, pidempään ja enemmän vaivihkaa kuin kukaan vielä ymmärtää. Olemme siirtymässä pois fossiilisista polttoainesta, nyt on elävän polttoaineen vuoro.
Nasan ja Pylkönmäen
Nasan ja Pylkönmäen tähtitieteilijöiden aivan uusimpien mullistavien tutkimusten mukaan aurinkomme muuttuu "valkoiseksi kääpiöksi" jo muutaman vuoden kuluttua. Tiedossa on siis juhannus pilkkikisoja jo n. vuonna 2015. Kemin lumilinnakin on pystyssä vielä heinäkuussa, ellei sitten saksalaisturistit sitä menneitä muistellen polta poroksi.

Mediaa tuo Tuntemattoman kysymys taitaa kiinnostaa lähinnä siksi, että sellaiset otsikot ehkä myyvät hyvin.

Päästöjä lisätään koko ajan. Hallitus vihreät etunenässä haluavat että Suomi käy risuilla ja palmuöljyllä ja kiristävät vesivoiman ja ydinvoiman verotusta. Ihan pimeää toimintaa.
Tiukka päästöjen
Tiukka päästöjen rajoittaminen on vielä elinehto koko maapallolle.
Niinpä Suomessakin tulisi vaan lopettaa päästöt. Ei tuoda enää oljyä, kaasua tms. maahan. Ensin säännöstelyä muutama vuosi ja sitten täysstoppi.
Yksi laki läpi eduskunnassa ja homma on sillä selvä.

Fiksua olisi säätää tuontirajoitukset ja päättää aikataulut nopeasti ja "etukenossa" muihin maihin verrattuna, ne joutuvat tulemaan perässä sitten vähemmän suotuisissa olosuhteissa.
Kun pelissä on enää päästötön energia huomio kääntyy automaattisesti ja nopeasti niihin päästöttömiin vaihtoehtoihin. Käytetään, tuetaan, lisätään ja verotetaan niitä kun muitakaan vaihtoehtoja ei enää ole. 'Jarlit' ja 'borikset' ovat sekavan valikoivine mielipiteineen tietysti harmittavia sekoittajia, mutta mielestäni paljon valitettavampaa on se, jos vakavasti otettavat luonnontieteilijät, kuten ympäristönmuutoksen professorin tittelillä ratsastava Atte Korhola liittyvät edes toisella jalallaan skeptikkojen taustatukijoiksi. Tältä ajatukselta ei voinut välttyä kun luki Atte Korholan mielipiteen "Ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutuksia ei pidä liioitella julkisuudessa" (HS 2.4.2009).
Sinänsä allekirjoitan suotutkija ja maantieteilijä A.Korholan esittämän asian, että tutkijoiden on syytä olla varovaisia tehdessään pitkälle meneviä johtopäätöksiä ja otsikoita tutkimustuloksista, jotka eivät siihen anna selvää perustetta. Tekstin henki on kuitenkin (ehkä osittain Korholan tarkoittamatta), että kaikki onkin aika hyvin. Seuraavat tekstistä nousevat johtopäätökset ovat minun, mutta uskon, että moni lämpenemistä epäilevä tulkitsee Korholan viestit epäilemättä juuri näin: Grönlannin jäätikön sulaminen on pysähtynyt, eikä se edes johtunutkaan ihmisen aiheuttamasta ilmaston lämpenemisestä, ei myöskään arktisten merialueiden sulaminen tai myrskyjen lisääntyminen/voimistuminen…. ja se Gorehan ON tosiaan huijari…myrskytuhot johtuvat pääasiassa maankäytön ja yhdyskuntasuunnittelun epäkohdista. Kaikki hyvin maan päällä, ympäristöaktivistien vouhotusta kaikki tyynni…
Aika jännällä tavalla Korhola myös antaa ymmärtää, että IPCC:n raporttien sanoma sisältää ikään kuin jo valmiiksi myös tieteellisesti tarkkaan punnitun huonoimman vaihtoehdon ja että kaikki sen yli menevä on katastrofeilla maalailua. Minusta vaikuttaa paremminkin siltä, että IPCC on aina hieman jäljessä (sen työskentelyprosessin hitauden johdosta) nopeasti etenevästä tutkimuksesta. Lisäksi IPCC:n raportteihin vaikuttaa myös konsensus, jonka takia ne ovat pikemminkin varovaisia kuin oikeasti tasapainoisia arvioita ilmaston lämpenemisestä ja sen mahdollisista seurauksista. Tieteen kentältä kuulee hyvinkin paljon huolestuttavampia arvioita kuin mitä IPCC päästää ulos. Esimerkkinä olkoon David Archerin kirjassaan The Long Thaw-kirjassa esittämä arvio merenpinnan noususta ja sen nopeudesta. Todella ajatuksia herättävä kirja muuten (vaikka se osoittautuisikin myöhemmin hieman pessimistiseksi).
Jos lähtee Korholan lailla hyssyttelemään jo valmiiksi 'hyssyteltyä' tietoa ja ennusteita, tuloksena on todella kasa "toistaalta ja sitten toisaalta"- raportteja, joista oltaisiin tyytyväisiä jopa sylttytehtaisssa. Korhola tuskin nostaa kirjoituspalkkioita tieteellisen epävarmuuden ostajilta, mutta samaan pussiin hän kuitenkin pelaa niiden kanssa näillä kirjoituksillaan, tahtoi tai ei. Ja samalla hän myös heikentää omaa arvovaltaansa ilmaston lämpenemisen mahdollisena asiantuntijana.
Lopussa Korhola kirjoittaa vielä, että "Yksipuolinen informaatio herättää vastanottajassa terveen tarpeen kyseenalaistaa valmiiksi tulkittua ja julistuksen muotoon puettua uutisointia." Minun mielestä mediassa on ollut esillä ihan riittävästi sitä toispuolistakin informaatiota, jossa kiistetään, että mitään ilmaston lämpenemistä olisi ollutkaan. Korhola haluaa ikään kuin nousta otsikoiden yläpuolelle kohti objektiivisen totuuden valoa ja jakaa sieltä toivon sanomaa kaikelle kansalle: kaikki hyvin, edes American Geophysical Unionin 16 000 tutkijaa eivät ole huolissaan, älä sinäkään ole!

Petteri osaat sitten varmaankin ilmaista mikä on sitä tasapainoista ja realistista tulevaisuuden kehityksen osalta. Edellisessä kokouksessa tultiin johtopäätökseen että lämpenemisestä tulisi voimakkaampaa kuin on aiemmin arvioitu perustuen aiemmin arvioitua voimakkaampaan päästöjen kasvuun. Nämä skenaariot kuitenkin perustuvat kaikki ilmastomalleihin ja mallien ilmastoherkkyys perustuu suurelta osin palautteisiin jotka ei taas ole kovinkaan kummoisesti tiedossa. Harrastetaan sivistyneitä arvauksia jos kauniisti sanotaan.
Ylen haastattelussa Atte toi varsin ansiokkaasti esille sen miten kaikki munat ovat nyt yhdessä korissa. Tätä asiaa olen pyrkinyt itsekin tuomaan esille vaikkakin omalla vaatimattomalla tavallani pienissä piireissä. CO2 on myrkky ja sitä vähentääkseen kaikki on sallittua. Hieman kärjistetysti ilmaistuna. Aivan kuten tuo todella olisi ainoa ympäristöongelma. Siihen kuitenkin erittäin suuri osa huomiosta ja rahoituksesta menee.
Mainitset Korholan kirjoituksesta Grönlannin ja arktisen alueen jäätilanteen, myrskyjen voimistumisen ym seikat. Tästähän on ollut jonkun verran jo puhetta. Korhola on kirjoittanutkin aiheesta jo useamman kerran. Kasvihuonekaasujen osalta tilanne on vain siitä metka että ne ovat syyllisiä kunnes toisin todistetaan. Arktisen jäätilanteen mahdollisesti luonnonperäisyydestä on maininneet muutkin tahot kuten brittien metoffice. Asiasta ei vain tiedetä tarpeeksi. Myrskykortilla ratsastetaan edelleen vaikka jo tiedetään että mm trooppisten hirmumyrskyjen intensiteetti vaihtelee omissa sykleissään ja viimeiset vuodet ollaan menty hyvinkin hiljaisissa merkeissä vaikka globaali mitattu lämpötila on korkeammalla kuin mitä se on ollut 1960-1970 luvuilla jolloin on mm ollut näin hiljaisia vuosia.
Lämpötila-arvioita voidaan nostaa päästökehityksen mukaan mutta paikkansapitävyys ei parane ilman tarkempia malleja jotka vaativat lisää tietoa. Samoin tähän voidaan yhdistää merenpinnan nousuarviot perustuen samaan rajalliseen tietomäärään. 1-3mm merenpinta on noussut siitä lähtien kun sitä on saatu järkevästi mitattua. 3mm tahdilla puhutaan 30cm 100 vuodessa, IPCC minimiarvio 58cm on jo tuplasti, pessimistiset arviot jotain ihan muuta.

Kirjaa jäiden lähdöstä pidetty vuodesta 1693 ja siitä lähtien jäät ovat lähteneet sykleittäin aikaisemmin ja aikaisemmin. Metkaa kun ottaa huomioon että vähänkään merkittävät ihmisperäiset päästöt ovat alkaneet astua areenalle vasta 200 vuotta myöhemmin. Pieneen jääkauteen ja luonnon kiertokulkuun tuo kyllä sopii hienosti mutta eihän se semmoisesta voi johtua?

Korhola on käsittääkseni tulkinnut eritavalla myös esim. Valtion teknillisen tutkimuskeskuksen toimesta toteutetun perusteellisen tutkimusohjelman turpeen ja turvemaiden kasvihuonevaikutuksesta Suomessa, jonka johtajana oli professori Ilkka Savolainen. Savolaisen johtopäätös oli, että "turve ei ehdi uusiutua tähän hätään". Lisäksi Savolainen totesi, että "Polttoturpeen kasvihuonevaikutus on likimain kivihiilen luokkaa, kun se tuotetaan nykyisellä tavalla metsäojitetuilla tai luonnontilaisilla turvemailla". Aika selkeä tutkimustulos siitä, että turpeen käyttö vaikuttaa ilmastoon ja nimenomaan lämmittävästi sinä aikana, kun ilmaston lämpenemistä pitäisi hillitä eli lähimpien vuosikymmenien aikana. Korhola on käsittääkseni ollut turpeen käytöstä ja merkityksestä ilmaston lämpenemisessä eri mieltä näiden johtopäätösten kanssa. Toivottavasti olen väärässä Korholan suhteen.
